The
emperor Alexander The Great, 356-323 BC,
was one of the most outstanding military
leaders the world has ever known. It
would, however, be unthinkable to
mention all of Alexanders achievements
without also mentioning the name of the
extraordinary horse that he rode through
most of his campaigns. This horse was
named Bucephalus and was out of the best
oriental and Thessalonian bloodlines. He
was bought by Alexanders father, Philip
of Macedon, for the equivalent enormous
amount of 10,000.- £. Bucephalus would
only allow Alexander to ride him when
caparisoned. Alexander rode him for the
last time in 327 BC at the battle of the
Hydaspes River, where Alexander defeated
the Indian king Porus. Bucephalus was at
the time 30 years old and he died
shortly afterwards from his many war
wounds. Bucephalus was buried with all
military honours, and Alexander founded
the city of Bucephalia on the site.
